Victorian scrap screen
We have brought this huge Victorian scrap screen out of storage and it will be on display in one of the rooms in Croxteth Hall for the first time this spring.
The sheer size of the screen is impressive. It is made from five double sided panels, each framed in solid walnut and joined with concealed brass hinges. The panels each measure 2m 30cm tall by 1m 10cm wide (7ft 6in tall by 3ft 6in wide).
Each panel is decorated with hundreds of individual images which were either painted directly onto the canvas backing, or cut out and glued over each other. The whole thing was then varnished. This process is called decoupage which was a popular pastime for ladies in Victorian times.
