Spring flowers

Wood sorrel flower in Croxteth Country Park

Daffodils and crocuses in the lawns bring cheerful colour and there are some early Rhododendron and cherry trees already in bloom.

Spring Squill - a small blue star-shaped flower is fully in bloom throughout some of our open woodland areas, and the ground under the trees is carpetted in bluebells - just the leaves showing though at the moment, but they will make a spectacular show in early May.

Smaller less obvious woodland flowers are also starting to bloom - look out for the wood anemone and wood sorrel (800x600 picture) in amongst the trees.

Catkins are now on the hazel bushes and alder trees, and the oak, beech and sycamore tree buds are starting to swell before bursting into fresh green leaves.

Early springtime is a great time to get out and about; we have recently opened Mull Wood, part of our local nature reserve, to walkers. If the going underfoot is a little 'rustic' for you in Mull Wood, we have miles of other well surfaced paths and tracks through the pastures and woodlands that make up the country park. Its a great chance to take some gentle exercise in pituresque surroundings!
