Beech tree felled

A forester in the high branches

A fungus - Merilipus giganteus - has infected the roots of this old Beech tree, and so it has to be felled, as its roots may not be able to hold it up much longer in a storm.

The tree team are felling it in sections as it is such a large tree, and it would cause a lot of ground damage if it came crashing down in one piece.

We are guessing it is between 150 and 170 years old, probably being planted about the time that the Walled Garden was laid out in its present form.

The large Beech crashes down!
