Ink cap fungus

This fungus grows on buried wood

Coprinus sylvaticus (unfortunately it has no English name!) is one of the Ink Cap fungi.

As they get older, they absorb moisture from the air, and the gills under the cap turn into a dark almost liquid substance - rather like ink.

Follow the link to see the full size picture of this fungus. Please be patient while the image loads.
