Eccentric Gadgets and Inventions

Hand cranked fire bellows

The Friends of Croxteth Hall and Country Park have kindly enabled us to stage this unusual exhibition of slightly weird, wacky and very inventive gadgets and gizmos dating mainly from the late Victorian and Edwardian period.

Between 1 April and 23 May, 150 items will be on display in various rooms as you follow the route taking in first the 'Downstairs' work areas for the many domestic servants who worked at the Hall, followed by the 'Upstairs' grand living areas for Lord Sefton, his family and guests.

The late Victorian and Edwardian era was a time of great ingenuity and inventions - many went on to be developed into items we would recognise even today, though many never really caught on and are now nothing more than curiosities. See if you can work out the use of some of the stranger items on display - or can you recognise the modern day equivalents of some of those really useful inventions?

We have a range of items on display, lent from the personal collection of Maurice Collins. All proceeds Maurice receives from his collection are directly donated to learning disability charities. Please visit Kith and Kids.

Admission to this exhibition is free with any of our tickets giving admission to the Hall (Family ticket, Saver ticket or Hall admission ticket) so why not come and marvel at the imagination and inventiveness of days gone by.

Colourful Easter eggsAlso for younger children we have an Easter Egg hunt around the display rooms of the Hall. Children can search for pictures of Easter Eggs, solve some simple clues (Mum and Dad can help) and all correct entries will be entered into a prize draw to win a 'golden ticket'. The Easter Egg Hunt runs from Friday 2 April to Sunday 18 April inclusive. The Easter Egg Hunt is free with a normal Hall admission ticket. Pick up an entry form from the Hall Gift Shop when purchasing your ticket.
