Cumbria, in the 1840s: The mysterious death of Eli Gutterby remains unsolved, and tensions continue undiminished between Eli's employer,Tobias Ludlow, and his rivals, the Hesketh family.
As Christmas approaches and the temperature plummets, new developments bring about a temporary thaw in relations. But it can't last, and the atmosphere soon turns feverish with the threat of another murder.
