Country Park KS2

Colourful trees on the front lawn at Croxteth HallSelf guided
The rich variety of habitats in the park provide great opportunities for studying the natural environment, geography and landuse. We are developing new programmes to incorporate nature conservation and 'green eco-issues' as we gear up for 2009 - Liverpool's 'Year of the Environment'.

We have a range of printed resources to help you get the most from your visit.

Maps and Maths Trail - Self led  (Suggested time - allow between 1 - 1½ hours)
Introducing basic map reading and geography, incorporating maths skills. The trail is around the front lawn area close to the Hall. Using our Map reading trail worksheet, children learn about basic compass directions, distances, scales, use coordinates, use keys and read and place features on a map. The Trail also goes into the Walled Garden. Worksheets 40p each, you will need pencils and clipboards.

Tree Trail - Self led  (suggested time - allow 45 minutes to 1 hour)
A trail around the front lawn of the Hall. Eleven species of tree are identified on the accompanying leaflet and examples of leaf-shapes are given along with a brief description of each tree. Information about the trees to be seen on the Tree Trail route, including a Tree word search with 27 words associated with trees and seeds - all of which can be seen in the Country Park. Leaflet 40p

Orienteering Courses - Self led
Designed for education use, using standard national colour format, there are several courses for pupils of differing abilities, graded from Yellow (easy)  through Orange (medium) to Red (hard). Choose from 1:5000 map (courses in the Inner Area around the Hall) or the 1:8000 map using the whole park. Course packs - map (1:5000 or 1:8000) and answer sheet. £1.00

Duration: 1½ hours

CentipedeMinibeast Detectives
The children will become minibeast detectives and search various habitats for small creatures (invertebrates) living there. Using pooters and/or spoons the detectives will catch and record their finds and draw some conclusions about the creatures including why they live in one habitat as opposed to another.

The food chain will be discussed in terms of the relationship between sunlight, green plants, decomposers, herbivores and carnivores.

Introducing Habitats
This visit looks at the nature of habitats, how they differ depending on type and location, how they support wildlife and form an essential part of the eco-system. Together they give us the biodiversity that forms our woodlands, meadows, ponds and pasture.

Croxteth Park is the ideal location to look at this topic as many different habitats can be observed within a relatively short walking distance. Sensible outdoor shoes, or ideally boots, should be worn.
