Country Park KS2
Self guided
The rich variety of habitats in the park provide great opportunities for studying the natural environment, geography, land management and its use. We have developed new programmes to celebrate Liverpool's Year of Innovation, Health and Wellbeing. Explore our beautiful parkland and stay healthy in mind and body.
We have a range of printed resources to help you get the most from your visit.
Guided Visits
Available: April - October 10.00am or 1.00pm (unless otherwise arranged)
Duration: 1½ hours
Charge: £3.80 per child.
Minimum charge: £95.00 per group
Risk Assessment: A Croxteth risk assessment
is available covering all visits to the Country Park.
Four Seasons Trail (January - November)
A healthy walk in our 'outdoor classroom' to explore the changing seasons at different times of the year. How these seasonal changes and changing weather conditions affect plants and animals will be introduced. We will also introduce the concept of climate change and how the traditional timing of the seasons is changing. The ability of nature and mankind to adapt to and minimize the effects of climate change is one of the key issues raised through discussion and observations 'in the field'.
The Park landscape has been 'managed' and shaped by people for over 500 years. Human influences on the landscape will be discussed; today land management aims to create a range of habitats and increase biodiversity to atttract wide range of species. A large part of our park is designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Other topical 'ecological' aspects such as litter and the effects of pollution on plants, animals and their habitats will be evidenced on the trail. Teachers notes for Four Seasons Trail
. Croxteth Risk Assessment
available.
Maps and Maths Trail
Introducing basic map reading and geography, incorporating maths skills such as estimation, counting and measuring. The trail is around the front lawn area close to the Hall. Using our Maps & Maths Trail worksheet, children learn about basic compass directions, distances, scales, use coordinates, use keys and read and place features on a map. Worksheets, pencils and clipboards provided.

. Croxteth Risk Assessment
available.
Minibeast Detectives
The children will become minibeast detectives and search various habitats for small creatures (invertebrates) living there. Using equipment supplied the detectives will catch and record their finds on the Croxteth Minibeast Detective recording sheets
provided and draw some conclusions about the creatures including why they live in one habitat as opposed to another.
The food chain will be discussed in terms of the relationship between sunlight, green plants, decomposers, herbivores and carnivores. Teachers notes for Minibeast Detectives
. Croxteth Risk Assessment
available.
I
ntroducing Habitats
This visit looks at the nature of habitats, how they differ depending on type and location, how they support wildlife and form an essential part of the eco-system. Together they give us the biodiversity that forms our woodlands, meadows, ponds and pasture.
Croxteth Park is the ideal location to look at this topic as many different habitats can be observed within a relatively short walking distance. Sensible outdoor shoes, or ideally boots, should be worn. Teachers notes for Introducing Habitats

available.
River Alt Study (April - September)
Duration: 1.5 hours starting at 10.00am or 1.00pm
Charge: £5.00 per child. Minimum charge: £125.00 per group.
The River Alt is Merseyside's second most important river after the River Mersey, and drains an important agricultural and residential hinterland from Huyton to Hightown, at which point it flows into the Irish Sea.
The study will cover relevant safety issues near water and focus on geographical features, landscape and physical surveys, a river bank profile, water depth and speed flow tests, aquatic life samples and data recording. Although students will not be directly getting into the River, they will learn how to 'kick sample' and how to use keys to identify aquatic life. Rangers will accompany the group to assist and direct the sampling and collection of data. Teachers notes for River Alt Studies
. Croxteth Risk Assessment
available.
