Up the Garden Path
This cross curricular activity uses basic map reading skills to find out about the features in our Victorian Walled Garden and how it produced a continuous supply of fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the Hall.

The visit uses printed resources highlighting features such as the flue wall (to extend the fruit ripening season), the glasshouses, the strangely shaped fruit trees, the peach house, the mushroom house, the bee-hives, the vegetable garden and flower borders, with a question and answer sheet based around a simple map grid of the garden area.

The map grid is used to make a list (table) of what plants have been found, where they were found and what they need to grow. The location of any animal found will be added to the table.

Example questions: "What direction do visitors face when they enter the door to the Walled Garden?", "Using your map, find the soft fruits. Look for a 'Ribena bush' named after Britain's highest mountain".

Don't forget the Vikings will be visiting the gardens again this June!
