Walled garden
Come and visit our Walled Garden - our own 'secret garden!'
See a beautiful historic garden with many original features. Learn about plants; experience their colours and shapes and find out about our horticultural heritage.
The Walled Garden is a haven of peace and tranquillity with much to offer educational groups.
Follow the pathways to visit different parts of a garden that has changed very little in over 150 years, and find the delights of one of the great 'kitchen gardens' of the past.
Look at the variety of shape, size and colour of plants and study how they grow. The garden incorporates a rare example of a flue wall, which helped to ripen fruits before the advent of glasshouses.
Wonderfully shaped fruit trees and archaic vegetables vie for attention along with the brash splendour of Victorian bedding plants. Also new for this year, we now have part of Liverpool's historic Botanical Collection
on display in a range of greenhouses, with many examples of unusual and exotic plants from many different countries.
The lawns are available (with garden or saver ticket) for schools to enjoy quiet activities such as storytelling or even a picnic in the good weather!
Our gardeners will answer questions about the garden and are happy to talk to visitors.
