Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, filmed at Croxteth Hall

Croxteth Hall has often starred in feature films and television period dramas; the rooms temporarily transformed while the film crews dress and light the actors. Most recently seen on television has been Casualty 1909. Scenes shot for the series included the hall courtyard, staircases and panelled rooms in the hall dressed to serve as either matron's office or the interiors of various parts of the hospital.

For all period drama the dressing is very important and wagon loads of props are unloaded to make the rooms look the part. A typical 'fussy' Victorian interior can take up to a day and a half to dress for a scene that is only minutes long when it is finally shown on television.

One of the most popular drama series, the remake of the Forsyte Saga spent several weeks here using much of the Hall. (The more scenes that can be shot in one location the more cost effective it is for the film company). Croxteth is fortunate that the Hall has wings built from Georgian to Edwardian style and has that advantage of versatility.

The attics, derelict sections and lodge buildings have all played their part at one time or another and filming brings a much valued income to the Hall.
